SEASON 2021 · THE YEAR OF THE GREAT OUTAGES

Our 2021 programme features five signature cocktails, each crafted from the finest infrastructure spirits available. This was a historic season — two of our most celebrated houses experienced dramatic disruptions, reminding every bartender that even the finest bottles can shatter. Sip thoughtfully.

Bartender's note: The signature drink of the house. The Free Pour is the only cocktail in our programme where the first glass costs nothing — and it's genuinely delicious. The Workers base spirit is years ahead of any competing distillery. R2 (announced in 2021, beta) promises to disrupt the S3 spirits market with zero-egress economics. The Zero Trust bitters add depth for enterprise palates. During the great outages of June 2021, this was the bar that stayed open — while Fastly and Akamai temporarily closed, Cloudflare served without interruption. Advanced WAF garnishes require the $200/mo Business shelf. The most versatile cocktail on the menu.

The Old Fashioned
$$$$
Akamai · Cambridge, MA · Est. 1998 (MIT) · 360,000+ servers, 135 countries
Ingredients
60 ml Kona Site Defender bourbon — gold standard WAF, ~100% detection, near-zero false positives
30 ml Prolexic DDoS rye — 20+ Tbps scrubbing capacity, the heaviest pour in the programme
2 dashes Bot Manager bitters — behavioral fingerprinting from Shape Security acquisition (2020)
1 cube Adaptive Media sugar — broadcast-grade 4K streaming, powering the world's largest events
peel EdgeWorkers orange twist — JavaScript at edge, enterprise configuration
METHOD
Stirred by specialist (months to deploy)
ABV
50% — Overproof
BODY
Heavy, commanding
FINISH
Extremely long (23 years)
PAIRS WITH
Fortune 500 mains only
Bartender's note: The drink for those who know exactly what they want and can afford it. The Kona/Prolexic base spirits are the finest security distillates in any bar — the benchmark everything else is measured against. However, this was also the summer The Old Fashioned had two incidents: the June 17 Prolexic routing table overflow (APAC, 4+ hours) and the July 22 Edge DNS disruption (global, 1+ hour — affecting banks and airlines). The bar recovered both times, but patrons were reminded that even 23-year-old whiskey can have a bad batch. Enterprise-only pricing excludes casual drinkers. EdgeWorkers compute is a pleasant garnish but not the main spirit.

The 150
$50/mo+
Fastly · San Francisco · Est. 2011 · ~60-70 PoPs worldwide
Ingredients
45 ml Instant Purge vodka — 150ms global cache invalidation, the fastest pour in the programme
30 ml VCL dry vermouth — Varnish Configuration Language for granular edge logic
20 ml Compute@Edge champagne — Rust, JS, Go via WebAssembly at the edge
dash Signal Sciences WAF bitters — acquired 2020, integrated by 2021
twist 100% real-time log lemon — zero throttling, complete transparency
METHOD
Expert-stirred (VCL mastery required)

BODY
Clean, precise
FINISH
Crisp, fast (150ms)
PAIRS WITH
Live media, APIs
Bartender's note: Named for the 150 milliseconds it takes this cocktail to hit — the fastest pour ever measured. The VCL vermouth gives the drinker unprecedented control over every sip. However, June 8, 2021 was the night The 150 shattered spectacularly: a latent software bug caused 85% of the bar's network to serve 503 errors for approximately one hour. Reddit, the BBC, NYT, Amazon, Twitch, Shopify, the White House, and the UK government portal all lost service. The bug had been introduced in a May 12 update and was triggered by a routine customer configuration. The bar identified the issue within one minute and restored 95% within 49 minutes. A humbling evening for a drink of such precision. The $50/mo minimum and steep VCL learning curve limit the audience. For those who appreciate its craft, nothing else is as sharp.

Penny Drop
$0.01/GB
Bunny.net · Ljubljana, Slovenia · Est. 2012 · ~59 PoPs
Ingredients
60 ml $0.01/GB gin — the most affordable base spirit on the menu, EU/NA pricing
top Bunny Optimizer tonic — automatic WebP image conversion for faster loads
20 ml Edge Storage cordial — globally replicated file storage
splash Bunny Stream soda — video hosting and delivery, launched 2021
garnish Perma-Cache mint — permanent content storage at the edge
METHOD
Built in glass (minutes)
ABV
25% — Light
BODY
Refreshing, clean
FINISH
~28ms (crisp)
PAIRS WITH
WordPress, startups, blogs
Bartender's note: The people's drink. Started with three bottles in a Slovenian flat and now serves from ~59 locations. The $0.01/GB pour is the most generous on the menu — a $1/month minimum gets you through the door. Bunny Stream (launched 2021) adds video capability. The ~28ms latency rivals bars three times this size. Security garnishes are basic (DDoS, free SSL — no enterprise WAF), and edge compute is essentially absent in 2021. But at this price, criticism feels ungrateful. The cleanest dashboard in the business and genuinely responsive human bartenders. No incidents on record for 2021 — while the big bars stumbled, the Penny Drop served every glass on time.

Cloud Nine
Pay-per-sip
AWS CloudFront · Seattle · Est. 2008 · ~310 edge locations
Ingredients
45 ml Lambda@Edge brandy — serverless compute at CDN edge, Node.js and Python
30 ml S3 Origin port — native integration, zero transfer fees within AWS
15 ml Shield Standard liqueur — free DDoS protection layer (Standard tier)
dash CloudFront Functions vermouth — lightweight JS for URL rewrites, headers (launched 2021)
garnish 1 TB free cherry — free tier: 1 TB transfer + 10M requests/month for 12 months
METHOD
AWS Console-stirred (complex)
ABV
35% — Smooth within AWS
BODY
Full (AWS-fed)
FINISH
Ecosystem-dependent
PAIRS WITH
S3, EC2, Lambda
Bartender's note: A perfectly harmonious drink — if you're drinking at the AWS bar. The zero-transfer integration between CloudFront and S3/EC2/Lambda creates a smooth, warm body no other bar can match within its own ecosystem. CloudFront Functions (launched May 2021) adds a new lightweight ingredient for URL rewrites. The free tier is genuine — 1 TB and 10M requests for 12 months. However, taken out of the AWS establishment, this cocktail loses its character entirely. Pay-per-sip billing can surprise you during heavy sessions. The configuration is complex — you'll need an experienced AWS bartender. During the June 8 Fastly outage, Amazon.com itself was partially affected because it load-balanced across Fastly, proving even Cloud Nine can't fully insulate against deep dependencies.
A Note on the 2021 Season
The summer of 2021 will be remembered as the season the bar industry learned humility. On June 8, Fastly's "The 150" suffered a global service disruption affecting 85% of its network for approximately one hour — taking down Reddit, the BBC, the NYT, and the White House. Nine days later, on June 17, Akamai's Prolexic routing tables overflowed, affecting banks and airlines in Asia-Pacific. Then on July 22, Akamai's Edge DNS experienced a global outage lasting over an hour, impacting Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Australian banks. These events proved that no single establishment is immune to failure, and that the wisest patrons diversify their drinking across multiple bars.
